The minimum pension under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) has been increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. The notification in this regard was issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on May 3, 2023. The enhanced minimum pension will be applicable to all eligible pensioners, including those who have already retired.
The increase in the minimum pension is a welcome move, as it will provide much-needed financial assistance to pensioners. It is also a major step towards ensuring social security for all workers in India.
To be eligible for the enhanced minimum pension, a member must have:
- Contributed to the EPS for at least 10 years.
- Retired at the age of 58 or above.
- Not opted for a higher pension under the EPS.
The enhanced minimum pension will be paid from the date of retirement. However, if a pensioner has already retired and is currently getting a pension of less than Rs 3,000, the difference will be paid to them in lump sum.
The government has also increased the employer’s contribution to the EPS by 1.16%. This increase will be applicable to all members who have exercised the joint option for contributing to the EPS.
The enhanced minimum pension and the increased employer’s contribution will come into effect from September 1, 2023.
